Second-Order Thinking
A reasoning method for mapping and checking material consequences beyond an action's immediate effect.
ProvisionalNot empirically validatedEpistemic · reasoning_method
E1 · Primary view
Map plausible downstream consequences and challenge the uncertain links.
Ask what follows, then check the links.
Separate a proposed causal link from the observations used to assess it. Compare material links with plausible alternatives, revise the map when observations conflict with a link, and carry missing or inconclusive checks forward as explicit uncertainty rather than a verified forecast.

- Method
- Representation
- Nodes are actions or consequences; links are conditional causal hypotheses. Each material link has a check record: proposed mechanism, serious alternative, distinguishing observation, available information and its limits, result (supported in the examined context, contradicted in that context, unresolved after checking, or not checked), and the resulting map revision or retained uncertainty.
- Steps
- Specify the action and immediate outcome.
- Ask which dependency or actor response follows.
- Name a rival consequence and uncertainty at each material link.
- For each link that could change the choice, state the mechanism and a serious alternative, then name an observation, prediction or counterexample that could distinguish them. Prioritize checks by decision relevance and the available time; do not investigate every conceivable link.
- Inspect relevant available observations, records or comparisons against both accounts. Record what was examined, its context and limitations, and whether it supports the link in that context, contradicts it, or leaves it unresolved. When no usable information is available or the check cannot be made within the time budget, mark the link not checked and record why; merely naming an alternative is not a completed check.
- Revise, qualify or remove a contradicted link and reconsider its downstream consequences. Retain only the support warranted by the examined context; an observation consistent with a link need not establish causation. Carry unresolved and not-checked links as conditional assumptions, and compare whether plausible alternatives would change the decision.
- Stop when additional detail is unlikely to change the decision within its time budget. Return the conditional map with check records, revisions and outstanding uncertainties; do not label unchecked links as checked conclusions.
- Limitations
- Later effects can be highly uncertain.
- The method does not prove policy or business outcomes.
- Available observations may be selective, confounded or from a different setting. Contextual support is not proof that the proposed mechanism caused the observation.
- Unresolved after checking and not checked are different outcomes. A deadline ends the review, not the uncertainty; neither outcome may be silently promoted to support.

D1
Compare options using material downstream effects, then choose within the decision deadline.
Consider downstream effects without endless analysis.
This procedure compares conditional maps and explicit check records produced by E1, including any unresolved or not-checked links. It requires E1; independently supplied scenarios would need a separately justified procedure. Performing E1 does not imply that every link was testable or supported.
